It’s the month of March, and do we know that it’s the time when all birds start making their home? In India, bird nesting season typically begins in March and lasts until June. During this time, birds do silly rituals, build their cute little nests, lay eggs, and raise their babies.
Sometimes, the timing can vary depending on weather conditions and bird species. For example, some say that the peak season is from the beginning of March until the end of July, as birds like to take advantage of the warmer weather and availability of nesting materials and food sources.
So today, we are going to learn about the few things we can do to make it a bit easier for them and also the things we should not do.
Some of the few things we can do for the birds in this nesting season.
Don’t cut or trim anything nearby
Birds choose to build their nests somewhere green like bushes, dense trees, or any sort of dense vegetation. One of the easiest ways we can help them during nesting season is to avoid cutting any of the greenery that our little friends need.
Leave out fallen leaves
Leaving out leaves for nesting birds is an excellent way to provide them with the necessary building material – and minimize your efforts to keep your garden clean! Your new garden residents love small sticks, leaves, and twigs, and they can use them to build their nests.
Giving them a nest
A simple and somewhat obvious way to help nesting birds in your garden is by providing a nest. Different species have different requirements when looking for a nest site so research which birds you have in the garden before choosing your nest.
Leave out helpful materials
Another way to support nesting birds is by leaving nesting material in your garden, It will save their time and energy. You can leave piles of dried twigs, leaves and grass around the garden or human and animal hair will also be helpful for many birds.
Provide plenty of clean water
It can be tricky for birds to find fresh water to drink, especially during harsh summers. One of the easiest ways we can lend a helping hand is by leaving out clean water each day.
Add a birdfeeder to your garden.
- Providing your nesting birds with fresh food and water is one of the most important help you can give them. Where you place your bird feeders matter. Don’t try to put it near their nests, this will attract other unwanted visitors, such as squirrels and cats, which can attack birds. The best is to place the feeders a bit away from the nest.
- Do not feed them bread, breads are bulky and might fill their stomach, but their nutritional value is zero. As humans, birds need nutrition too. Thus, feed them with the right quality seed mix that will meet their energy levels. Most of the birds love fruits. You can feed them with cut apples, pomegranates, bananas, grapes or bruised and fallen fruits.
Planting bird-friendly trees.
Trees are a mini town for these birds, where they find food, shelter, neighbours and other stuff they need in order to survive. Keeping the old trees and growing the new ones is the keystone for bringing these birds back into our surroundings.
Trees that will attract birds to your area:
- Jamun
- Mango
- Neem
- Peppal
- Litchi
- Banyan
- Gulmohar
- Kapok
And many more.
With all these tiny steps we can increase the bird count in our area. Happy birding this year!!
