Why do crickets come out when it rains?

Crickets also called Jhingur are some of the noisiest insects on the planet. The sound of these insects might be soothing for some people, but for others, it might be annoying.

When we find this cockroach-like noisy insect on the bedroom floor, some of us disturbed humans quickly try to kill this poor little cricket with their slipper’s fast whack. But there is more about them than just ugly appearance and annoying chirps. So today let’s learn about them.

What is Cricket?

Crickets are known for their noise. Only male crickets make that noise The purpose of the chirping noise is to attract a potential female mate or to repel and warm other males. Many people confuse them with grasshoppers. But crickets are insects, very much related to grasshoppers, cockroaches, locusts, etc. They are harmless to humans.

More than 1,000 species of crickets are found in India. Some species of crickets can fly, while others cannot. Crickets use their wings for flight and communication. For example, house crickets and field crickets can fly, and they often fly towards lights at night. House crickets usually prefer to crawl, and field crickets only fly when in large groups. Crickets’ flight is often clumsy, so when they sense danger, they usually run away to find a hiding place.

Why do crickets come out when it rains?

Like all living things, it requires water to live. Moisture in general is very desirable to species that breed in water and eat damp wood. Humidity and heavy rains create the perfect environment for crickets to thrive.

Grasshoppers vs crickets, what is the difference between these two jumping insects?

Before asking about the differences, it is best to start with the similarities. Technically speaking, they are both members of the same insect order: the Orthoptera.

Members of the order Orthoptera have many things in common. These include back legs modified for jumping, the same kind of biting mouthparts and the same kind of forewings. Crickets have split from grasshoppers before the age of the dinosaurs, at least 250 million years ago.
